Haguro, where the Takenotsuyu Brewery was founded in 1858, is known across Japan for the Haguro sect of the shugendo religion, which is an ascetic practice introduced to the mountain 1400 years ago. Followers of the religion aim to become one with nature, and the forerunner of the Takenotsuyu Brewery produced sake for use in shugendo rituals. Takenotsuyu prides itself on using only local ingredients, including seven different kinds of top-grade Yamagata rice, and the exceptionally pure water that flows from deep inside the nearby mountains. Traditional techniques and modern technology combine to produce pure, unadulterated sake, which may be enjoyed at a wide range of temperatures.
