Sudoku puzzles are very simple to learn, require no calculations, and offer a surprisingly wide variety of logical conundrums. All that is required is your brain, and a bit of concentration. Sudoku puzzles were not originally invented by Nikoli. The original idea came from an American puzzle called Number Place, which Nikoli first introduced to Japanese readers in 1984. The original Japanese name was ‘Suji wa dokushin ni kagiri’, which roughly means that ‘it’s good to be single’, and was derived from the fact that each number may only be used once. This name was deemed too long, however, and it was shortened to ‘sudoku’, with ‘su’ meaning number and ‘doku’ meaning single. Sudoku was not a huge hit when first launched in Japan, and in 1986, Nikoli amended the rules so that the digits had to be arranged in a symmetrical pattern. After this improvement was made, the puzzle became a big hit in Japan, and is now one of the most popular puzzles in the world. 18 x 10.5 cm 110g ![]() ![]() |
