Asakusa
North London is a favourite spot for young Japanese to congregate, which may explain why Asakusa’s such a gem. With reasonably priced, hearty, wholesome food and a casual, convivial atmosphere, it’s a great spot to down a few Japanese beers without having to pay nosebleed prices for the privilege. Fun and funky, just like Japan.
  • The closest to the “real thing” I’ve found outside of Japan
  • When you step through the doors it’s like you’ve taken a portal direct to Tokyo
  • Relaxed atmosphere and reasonable prices…the nearest thing to an ‘authentic’ Japanese experience most Londoners can get
Donzoko
Located in a prime Soho spot, Donzoko caters to a mixed crowd of expats and non-Japanese alike. The hanpen highlighted by one of our reviewers is a soft, marshmallowy fish-and-yam cake served with a smear of hot mustard, but the comprehensive menu offers less daring choices, too. Wash down the sharing dishes with sake or shochu from its extensive drinks list.
  • Makes you feel like you’re in Japan
  • Great Japanese beer selection and fun environment
  • Like walking into Japan. Unique Hanpen
Nagomi
This charming little haunt, just off Oxford street, serves up deliciously authentic dishes for a real taste of Japan – but you can also venture down the stairs to a the basement bar where there’s also two low-ceiling private rooms, perfect for a party. A sleek and unique spot, equally good for a quick bite or a long night.
  • Reminds me of the izakaya I used to visit in Roppongi
  • Great selection of Japanese bar nibbles
  • Great if you are a bit posh or want to impress

Tomoe
Just as you’re guaranteed to find a pub or two wherever there’s a British expat population, Japanese residents know an authentic izakaya when they see one. Traditional bar-style sharing dishes are served in a casual environment with an extensive range of beer, shochu and sake on offer – the perfect way for Japanese residents to unwind in a home away from home.
