The Seven Sushi Samurai + Sushi Awards 2005, the final event of the fourth Original Sushi Competition, was held at Chino Latino Restaurant & Bar in Central London on 7 November.

Original Sushi Competition Grand Winner

Chair of Judges & award-winning chef Jean-Christophe Novelli announced the result of the main competition, with Cynthia Awor-Ojera being named Grand Winner for her dish, ‘Crunchy Makizushi', winning a pair of return flights to Japan courtesy of ANA and a host of other prizes.
Cynthia was overwhelmed when she found out that she was the Grand Winner, saying, “I can't believe it! I never win anything!” She was grateful to her teacher at catering college, Mark Clement, for encouraging her to enter, saying that, “if it wasn't for you, Mark, I wouldn't be standing here now. Thank you!” |
| The judges liked several aspects of Cynthia's dish. Henry Harris said that, “It was down to flavour - it had the best flavour, and it combined good, positive seasonings. It also won on originality - the idea of flavouring the rice with the chicken and other ingredients was good.” |
 |
His fellow judge Silla Bjerrum, Executive Chef of Feng Sushi, said that “Crunchy Makizushi was clearly the winner on taste, and it was a cheeky, funny idea to use the crushed crisps to add texture. I like the fact that there were two different kinds of rice, one with different flavourings mixed in. It was also the most innovative of the dishes.”
