A small, inconspicuous town in Aomori - Oma - sits on a bay which is home to the world’s most expensive fish, and one of the most expensive ever - at £111,000 - was sold last week. The giant bluefin was put up for auction at Tsukiji, Tokyo’s biggest fish market, in a new year’s tuna sale that sets the benchmark for the tuna market in the coming year. But the giant fish, and its giant price tag, was anomalous - with veterans bemoaning a drop in overall quality. Bluefin tuna has become surrounded by controversy, but this massive price tag clearly indicates that people remain prepared to pay for a fish that has become synonymous with high-end sushi.
